Portable Projectors Might Be the Most Fun Tech Purchase Right Now
Do I need a tiny projector? Probably not.
Do I want to watch a movie projected onto the side of the house while sitting under a blanket with snacks? Obviously.
Portable projectors have become much more appealing as the technology has improved. They're smaller and easier to move around, and many models now include built-in streaming features.
This may be one of those gadgets that's completely unnecessary and somehow still makes perfect sense.
Movie Night Can Go Anywhere
This is the entire appeal: A portable projector doesn't permanently belong to one television setup.
Move it into the bedroom for a movie night. Take it outside when the weather is good. Bring it along on a cabin weekend if you know you'll have a suitable place to project.
Watching a movie feels like an event again. I appreciate technology that gives me an excuse to make popcorn.
You Still Need Somewhere to Project
Before you buy one, look around your house. Do you actually have a large blank wall?
Because apparently I have spent years covering every available surface with art.
A projector works best when you've got an appropriate wall or screen and can control the amount of light in the room.
You don't necessarily need a permanent projector screen, but you do need a plan. Pointing it toward a wall covered in framed family photos isn't going to create the cinematic experience we're after.
Brightness Makes a Difference
Portable projectors can vary significantly in brightness, and a projector that looks great in a dark bedroom may struggle in a brighter space.
Think about where you'll actually use yours. If you're imagining backyard movie nights, remember that projectors generally perform better once it's properly dark.
Check What You Can Actually Stream
Built-in streaming sounds convenient, but don't assume every projector supports every service exactly the way you expect.
Before buying, check which apps are supported and whether you'll need an external streaming stick.
Also look at connectivity if you plan to use a laptop, gaming console, or another device.
Nothing kills movie-night enthusiasm faster than spending 45 minutes whisper-yelling, “WHY WON'T IT CONNECT?”
This Is Tech for Fun
A portable projector probably isn't going to make me more productive. Good, because not every gadget needs to optimize my life.
Sometimes technology can simply make an ordinary Friday night more entertaining. Set up the projector. Make something good to eat. Turn off the lights.
And if we're watching outside, somebody please bring the good blanket.
