Fall Deep Cleaning Is a Thing—Here’s What’s Actually Worth Cleaning
Spring cleaning gets all the publicity. Meanwhile, fall is when I'm about to shut the windows, drag out the blankets, and spend considerably more time inside staring at everything I haven't cleaned since April.
Perhaps we should discuss that.
I'm not suggesting you dedicate an entire weekend to scrubbing your house with a toothbrush. I just think a few deeper cleaning jobs make sense before we officially enter cozy-inside season.
Start With the Windows
If you've spent the summer opening windows, there's a good chance the tracks and screens have collected an impressive amount of dirt.
Vacuum out loose debris and wipe down the tracks.
Clean the inside of the glass while you're there.
You don't necessarily need to spend Saturday scaling the exterior of your house like a Victorian chimney sweep. We're doing what's reasonable.
Wash the Cozy Stuff
The blankets are coming back. Before you wrap yourself in one for the next several months, give washable throws and removable pillow covers a refresh according to their care labels.
This is also a good time to wash any bedding that doesn't make it into your regular laundry rotation. There's something deeply satisfying about pulling out a freshly cleaned blanket on the first genuinely cold night.
I would like my coziness sanitized, please.
Give the Kitchen a Little Attention
I'm not emptying the entire kitchen. I am interested in cleaning the areas that tend to get ignored.
Wipe out the refrigerator shelves and clean the microwave properly. Take a look at the oven before holiday cooking begins.
And check the pantry for expired food while you're there. If I find a spice with a copyright date older than my current hairstyle, it's probably time.
Look Up
Ceiling fans spend all summer working hard and quietly collecting dust. Then we ignore them because they're above eye level.
Clean the blades before switching the fan direction for cooler weather, if that's something you do.
Light fixtures can use attention, too. Just turn everything off first.
Clean Under the Furniture You Can Actually Move
I’m not asking you to relocate a 400-pound entertainment center.
But if you can easily pull the sofa away from the wall or move a nightstand, vacuum underneath it.
The amount of dust that can gather under furniture is honestly impressive. It's like the house has been saving it for us.
Don't Forget the Entryway
Fall means leaves, wet shoes, and eventually whatever winter plans to drag through the front door.
Clean the doormat or replace it if it has given up on life.
Shake out washable rugs and clear whatever has accumulated near the door.
This is also a good moment to make room for jackets and boots before they start appearing everywhere.
Future clutter is approaching. Prepare the defenses.
You Don't Need a 47-Item Checklist
The internet loves turning seasonal cleaning into a competitive sport. I'm not participating.
Choose the jobs that make the biggest difference in your house and ignore the ones that don't.
Maybe you clean the windows this weekend and wash all the blankets next weekend. The house does not have to be deep-cleaned in a single heroic Saturday.
I want my home feeling fresh for fall. I also want to enjoy fall.
Those goals should be able to coexist.
