The Apple-Picking Weekend Deserves a Spot on Your Fall Calendar
Every fall, I apparently forget how many apples one person can reasonably consume. I arrive at an orchard with confidence. I leave carrying enough fruit to operate a small roadside stand.
And I regret nothing.
An apple-picking weekend is one of those wonderfully low-stakes fall trips where you don't need a complicated itinerary. Find a good orchard, stay somewhere cute nearby, and let the weekend unfold from there.
Find the Orchard Before You Book the Hotel
This sounds obvious, but start with the apples. Some orchards offer pick-your-own fruit throughout the season, while others may have specific picking dates or varieties available at different times.
Check before you go. You don't want to build an entire weekend around apple picking only to discover the orchard stopped pick-your-own two days earlier.
That would be a very sad cider donut.
Go Earlier in the Day
I'm not interested in setting an alarm at 6 a.m. for recreational fruit gathering. But I would aim for earlier rather than later.
You'll have more time to enjoy the orchard without feeling rushed, especially if there's more to do than picking apples.
And if you're going during a popular fall weekend, arriving earlier can help you get ahead of some of the crowds. Then you can spend the afternoon exploring somewhere nearby.
Make the Orchard Part of the Trip, Not the Whole Trip
Apple picking itself probably isn't going to occupy your entire weekend. Look for an orchard near a small town or mountain area where you'll have other things to do once you've collected your apples.
Browse the shops. Find somewhere good for dinner. Take a scenic drive if the leaves are changing. We're building a weekend around apples.
Dress for the Actual Activity
This is not the moment for the beautiful fall boots that have never touched dirt. You're walking around an orchard. Wear comfortable shoes and layers you can remove if the afternoon warms up.
I would also bring something that can survive an encounter with grass and possibly mud.
You can still look cute. Just remember that Mother Nature did not receive your outfit mood board.
Have a Plan for the Apples
Standing in the orchard, a giant bag of apples seems perfectly reasonable. At home, it becomes clear that you've made a logistical error. Before you pick, think about what you'll actually do with them.
Make apple crisp. Cook apple butter. Slice some for snacks.
And give a few away if necessary. Nobody has ever been angry because you appeared at their house carrying apples.
This Is My Kind of Fall Weekend
I love a trip with one simple reason for going. We're picking apples. Everything else is a bonus.
Stay somewhere cozy and find a good dinner. Come home Sunday with a bag of apples rolling around the back seat. Then spend the following week googling what else you can possibly make with them.
It's tradition.
