The 20-Minute Home Refresh for When You Hate Your House

September 21, 2026•3 min read

Sometimes I think I hate my house. But really, I just need to move a lamp.

Every few months, I start looking around my home and feel completely uninspired by it. The living room looks boring. The bedroom needs something. I start mentally pricing new furniture and wondering whether this is finally the year I become a wallpaper person.

Usually, I don't need any of that. I need 20 minutes and permission to mess with things.

Clear the Visual Clutter First

Before deciding your room needs a makeover, clear off the surfaces. Put away the mail that's been sitting on the counter. Remove whatever has accumulated on the coffee table. Take the random water glass back to the kitchen.

Remove enough visual noise that you can actually see the room again. This step alone occasionally cures my sudden desire to redecorate.

Move Something

This sounds ridiculously simple because it is. Move a lamp to another table. Turn a chair slightly. Swap the side tables in your bedroom or pull a piece of furniture a few inches away from the wall.

We stop noticing rooms when they've looked exactly the same for too long. Changing one thing can make your brain look at the space again.

And if it looks terrible, just move it back. Interior design crisis averted.

Shop Another Room

Before buying something new, wander around your own house.

That vase you've stopped noticing in the bedroom might look perfect on the dining table. A small piece of art can move into the hallway. Even switching throw pillows between rooms can make both spaces feel different.

I especially like doing this with decor I've had in the same spot for years. Apparently, putting an object on a different shelf is enough to convince me I've acquired something new. (This is excellent news for my bank account.)

Change the Textiles

Fabric has a surprisingly big effect on how a room feels. Swap out a throw blanket. Change the pillow covers. Put fresh bedding on the bed.

This is also an easy way to make your home feel more seasonal without turning it into the seasonal aisle at a craft store.

For fall, I might bring in a heavier throw or warmer colors. In spring, I want everything lighter.

Fix the Lighting

If a room feels blah at night, your furniture might not be the problem. It might be the giant overhead light.

Turn it off and use lamps instead. Move a lamp into a dark corner or switch to a warmer bulb if the big lights feel harsh. Nobody needs their living room illuminated like a pharmacy.

Bring in Something Alive

Living, breathing objects can add some extra to the room without a huge investment. This doesn't have to mean buying an enormous fiddle-leaf fig and immediately becoming responsible for its emotional well-being.

Clip a few branches from the yard. Put grocery-store flowers in a vase. Move an existing plant somewhere you'll actually notice it.

A little greenery can make a room feel instantly fresher. And if you can’t keep plants alive, I respect your journey. Good faux greenery has come a long way.

Stop at 20 Minutes

We're refreshing the house, not doing a six-hour furniture rearrangement that ends with you sitting on the floor surrounded by bric-a-brac.

Set a timer. Then clear a few surfaces, move something around, and make one little change that makes the room feel good again.

Then hard stop.

You Might Not Need to Buy Anything

I love a home decor purchase as much as the next person. But I've learned that when my house starts feeling boring, buying something isn't always the answer.

Sometimes the room just needs fresh eyes. Move the lamp. Steal the vase from upstairs. Turn off the overhead light. Twenty minutes later, you might like your house again.

And if you still want the wallpaper?

Well. We'll discuss that tomorrow.
